As with any profession, architects have a specific way of communicating. When talking with potential clients, architects have a way of trying to dazzle with elegant phrases and informed jargon. That same “talent” can also be one of our biggest flaws. Through the heavy use of idioms, metaphors, and unintentionally hilarious comparisons, we sometimes struggle to communicate clearly. I began writing down some of the things I overheard in meetings, around the office, and with design colleagues. Throughout the book I’ve written the quote said by an architect, along with the non-architect (English) translation. The illustrations in this book are sometimes a satirical response to the quote. Most times the illustrations are based on my experiences of being a 20/30-something year old participating in and observing the latest urban trends. The Millennial version of “keeping up with the Joneses “ has become about who can try the trendiest food spot, travel the most places, and have the most jealously inducing social media post. I, myself, am a hipster according to most standards. I am also an architect. So, all of the content is aimed at me as much as anyone else. Don’t take this too seriously and don’t get all butt-hurt over it.

Architect to English An Illustrated Guide to the Language of Architects Chad Pryor 9780692702697 Books Reviews
Really fun and quirky book! A good laugh for anyone, but particularly for architects and designers!
Great read! Illustrations are on point! A great gift for anyone in the profession or anyone looking to understand someone that is!
The author draws an interesting insight into a everyday language of architecture. I may just use a few in my business world. Fun read! Will watch for more books by this author.
Clearly Chad is "in the know" pertaining to the profession! While its really geared to the architecture/interiors/construction community, the tongue n cheek nature of the book does have broad appeal to folks who have a good sense of humor. )
This book is funny, insightful, and definitely a conversation starter. There are small details, such as the 'scale' on many of the illustrations, that give architects/designers a sense of personal connection, but the overall simplicity of the layout makes it easy for anyone to enjoy.
We originally bought this book to better understand an architect relative's rhetoric. We were surprisingly entertained by each illustration and delighted with the "English" translations. The author uses millennial angst, mixed with hipster humor, to create relatable situations for every day architectural jargon. Each page, together with it's illustration, gives insight on what it's like to be an up-and-coming architect in a office of like-minded talent and fierce competition, all while figuring out the many responsibilities of adulthood.
Humorous read that illustrates the nuances of design and architecture. Great add to my collection!
