DreamWake is a sci fi story told in first person present, with the perspective switching back and forth between the two MCs. The vocabulary (except for the technical parts) and style of writing give it the feel of a YA story. It is well-edited and doesn't suffer from a bunch of glaring typos and misused words.I found the story to be a bit confusing. It involves dreams and a device, the DreamWake, that allows the user to experience lucid dreaming. However, it was never very clear to me how the device was supposed to work. I was also confused by the jargon involving network hacking. This could well be an issue for other readers with my level of understanding of that topic. The problem with this is that it is central to the plot. I also couldn't quite piece together the limits on dreams, how some could enter the dreams of others without using technology, and how people ended up suffering actual injuries while in a dream state.
The plot is good. It's sort of a classic good guys v bad guys with the battling being done primarily in Matrix-like settings, which the author describes very well. There is also a budding romance thread that didn't seem very convincing to me.
The premise is super interesting and is one that I could see actually developing someday in the real world. The author also touches on some philosophical issues involving the nature of reality and human will. These are well-done and don't go too deep.
Overall, it was a relatively easy read that I wished I had understood better. I feel like if I had a better grasp of the technical aspects of networking I would have better appreciated the threat posed by the antagonists and what they were up to. Even so, the descriptions of the dream worlds made this a pretty interesting read.

DreamWake edition by Jordan Bell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I love this book!! I can't put it down!! Like most people I'm getting sick of post-apocalyptic dystopian blah, blah, blah. This is something new and highly unique! The world needs new and interesting ideas and that is what Jordan Bell has put together in DreamWake. I can't stop thinking about it. So thought-provoking and all out fun!!
Dreamsurf have produced the perfect technology which allows you to work while you sleep, participate in gaming tournaments, attend parties or do whatever you care to with a group of your friends. Sounds ideal, what could possibly go wrong? Hackers, that's what and this lot are an extremely unpleasant bunch.
Such a novel idea. Anyone who has managed to lucid dream or wished they could, are bound to enjoy this great story.
Likeable characters, a sprinkling of humour and some incredible action sequences amidst a very unique and compelling story.
This was a very satisfying read. Next please!
Highly recommended.
In Dreamwake, Jordan Bell has created a unique perspective into the state of dreams. This is a nice break from the usual dark fantasy and dystopian works inundating the Indie book world.
Pinch me! I think I’m dreaming. Only here, you can get killed.
Is Dreamwake a take on virtual reality? Because thoughts become reality in this dream world. And, like in actual life, it can be manipulated. Sam, one of the main characters, is dreaming and in this state, he encounters Jane, a dream forensic detective, also dreaming. They interact with one another and with other people who have walked into their dreams.
DreamWake is a device to induce a dreaming state. And a network too and as such, susceptible to hacking. Gamers out to take control of the world, hack into the servers and create chaos. Jane and Sam come to the rescue. It is an interesting concept comparable to movies such The Matrix and Inception, where characters drift in an out of the binary and real world.
Bell is an engineering and design student. I can see how the poetic part of his mathematical brain emerges in Dreamwake. His colourful descriptions give a peek into his love of dreams and design. The opening chapter was enthralling. He lost me in the Flag game. I just couldn’t figure out what was going on. I thought Dreamwake deserved only 3 stars. However, this is not only a personal take on a piece of prose but also an evaluation of a writer’s capability to focus on a plot. And that he does. Prose is quite beautiful at times, especially when Bell describes the dream landscape where apparently anything is possible, even zombies in bubbles.
And just for that, I gave him 4*.
I found the italics irritating. They are long and frequent. It took away my focus from the narration. And sometimes irrelevant because the person thinking is alone! A few quibbles such ‘laying’ instead of ‘lying.’ I’ve noticed quite a number of younger writers doing this. Some of DreamScyther’s quotes are incomprehensible. And I don’t see why he wants to tame the wild beast that is my dreaming mind. My dreams are staid and proper and glow like Bell’s colours with nothing beastly about them!
Phenomenal book! Great plot and amazing character development! So great to see new ideas and concepts being published! 5/5 would recommend to anyone!
DreamWake is a fantastic book. I found the story to be something fresh. It was a real page turner with a tactful plot and surprises around every corner. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fiction and delving into a universe other than our own. I certainly hope there will be further installments to expand on an already riveting creation.
